National Foundation Day, “개천절” one of Korea’s top five national holidays
October 3rd is National Foundation Day, a national holiday. Gaecheonjeol was established in 2333 BC to commemorate Dangun's founding of Dangun Joseon (Go Joseon).
In Gaecheonjeol, "Gaecheon" means that Hwanwoong, the god of heaven and the son of Hwanin, opened the sky for the first time and came down under the Sindansu of Taebaek Mountain (Baekdu Mountain) to open a new poem to express the will of Hongik people (It means to benefit the human world widely.)
The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea originally set October 3 of the lunar calendar as National Foundation Day in 1919 and held a celebration event. However, in 1949, the Ministry of Education changed the date of October 3 of the lunar calendar at the time of the founding of Gojoseon to the solar calendar because it was impossible to convert it into a modern date and the date of October 3 itself was precious.
National Foundation Day played a major role in restoring Korea's independence and raising the national faith when it was oppressed by Japanese colonial rule in the past. National Foundation Day is very meaningful in that it promotes the identity and pride of the nationality of a single race with a long history.
