- Written interview responses are often written while the interviewee is in a comfortable position. What time and what space are you in now? What can you see when you look up?

[ARA] غالبًا ما ي قو م الض يف بكتاب ة الر دو د الخاص ة بال اقب لة الصح فية ف ي مكانًا مر يحًا بالن بسة له، فهل ي مكن أن ت خبرنا أ ي و قت الآن، وأي ن أن ت؟ إذا ر فع تر أ سك لأعل ى ما هو أو ل شءي تر اه؟

I didn't want to tap out answers with my cell phone, so I waited until I got to the studio and turned on my computer. It's 10:30 on a Saturday night now and I'm sitting in my studio chair after finishing a workout and the day’s work. When I look up, I can see some of the artist Yoon Hyung-geun's paintings hung on the wall and a variety of work equipment. It’s familiar stuff well used by my own hands.

- There is going to be a <Vogue> cover shoot at the Korea Furniture Museum. You seem to have a firm subjectivity in each photo shoot beyond simply 'taking a cool picture’. What is the goal or wish you want to achieve in this <Vogue> cover project?

[ARA]فيما ي خص تصوير غلاف مجلة < ڤوغ> ف ي متحف الأثاث الكور ي، نعت قد أن RM لدي ه و جهة نظر معينة خاص ة بكل جل سة تصوير؛ حي ث يتجاوز الأمر مجر د " الت اقط ص ور ذات مظهر لطيف". لذا، نود أن نتعرف عل ى الر غبة أو الهدف ال ذي تو د الوص ول إليه من خلال م رشوع تصوير غلاف مجلة < ڤوغ .>

It's my first time doing an individual cover and it's a <Vogue> cover, too, so there’s a fair amount of pressure. And so, yeah, I think it would be nice if the photos not only had a cool look or feel, but also had emotion and heart. You know there are plenty of people out there with a better look than me. Being with Bottega Veneta, I hope their sensitivity and philosophy can be subtly revealed in the photos.

- Artists will mainly express themselves in creation alone. But there will be times working with multiple staff in photo shoots like this (one has to say the two go together). Are there any principles you adhere to when working with multiple people on a single product?

[ARA]ف يالعادة يتحمل ال فنانون ع بء التعبير والإبداع و حده ،م إلا أن ه ف ي جل سة التصوير هذه هناك الكثير من الأمور الت ي يت م التعاو ن فيها مع العدي د من الم ؤسولي ن الآخر ي ن (يمكن ال قول إن هناك جهتان تتعاو ن معهما). فهل هناك أ ي مبادئ تتبعها عند التعاو ن مع عدة أ شخاص ف ي ع مل واحد؟

Of late, I’ve been working with a diversity of new people. I only really experienced working alone or with a small group of people in the past. I’ve acquired a lot of fresh stimulation and inspiration from this opportunity. I’m setting a principle. 

But if your story is included you have to show your creativity anyway. To do that, I think I need to look at life from multiple angles and fill the pages of each day faithfully and tightly. 

I believe that I can do well in work and creativity only when I am faithful to my life, and when I have fun. I try to remember that creation is only a job after all.

- I exchanged messages with Matthieu Blazy, Bottega Veneta's creative director, on Instagram. Matthieu welcomed me into the 'family', posting a picture of RM's Bottega Veneta campaign, and wrote that he was happy that I was a part of it too. I attended Bottega Veneta's 2023 F/W collection held in Milan last February. The all-black look matched the brand image and RM. We’ve got to know your passion for music and art clearly enough. But with regards to fashion itself, what does it mean to you?

I was struck when I first came across the phrase “fashion is an idea”. It’s something of an exaggeration but I also see where the notion is coming from. I’ve always thought of fashion as being somewhat close to a kind of attitude or posture. We can't just walk around in a state of undress. 

But while you don’t want to force your idea of fashion on others, what you wear is a means to elegantly express yourself. These days, however, I try not to overload it with meaning. Sometimes I feel that kind of thinking gets to me too much. That said, I still love and value fashion. 

My personal dress history has evolved from street through gothic to American casual and minimalism.

Classical scholars of the Joseon Dynasty escaped to Jeongja (pavilion) to focus the mind, fleeing the secular world for sequestration in nature. This is K-culture in a space revealing the beauty of timeless architecture: From a palace house built by reviving a section of Changgyeonggung Palace to a yard embracing nature,

The lotus flower is considered to resemble a noble scholar unstained by this world. The 'Yeonhwado' folding screen is placed in the hall of the sarang-chae. RM shows off a natural and sophisticated look by styling a wool cashmere sweater with a relaxed turtleneck detail and Bottega Veneta's signature weaving leather pants.

- You said that “To be living in the present is my dream”. What motivated you to have such a dream, and what efforts do you make to focus on the 'here and now'? 

[ARA]ل قد صر حت من قبل قائ ًلا "ال حاضر الذي أعي شه الآن هو حلم "ي، ما الذي دفعك لأن يكون هذا هو حلمك؟ و ما الجهو د الت ي تبذلها من أجل التر كيز عل ى"الو قت وال مكا ن الحال "ي؟

After being involved in the arts and music for such a long time, I came to realize that everything is related to eternity. Ironically enough, I also realized that the best way to reach eternity is to be immersed in the present. It could be due to the era we’re living in or the social environment in Korea, but we always seem to be living in some mental past or future. 

All the things you regret, miss, desire or dream about were and will be in the present. If you are existing in a different tense, you’ll be obsessed with what has passed or will never even come to pass. Even if I don’t manage to attain a certain sense of accomplishment in a single day, I’ll comfort myself, reminding myself of what I did do at the end of the day, saying, ‘You did and thought so much', you know? I don't want to be regretting the good stuff before it even starts or fearful of future bad things. 

I think routine is what’s important. For me that’s work, alcohol, exhibitions, exercise, and walks. These keywords are the underpinnings to my existence of late.

- You said, “I value the work-life balance and get stressed out if I can’t keep to it.” It can’t be easy to keep to as an artist. What do you think work-life balance means? 

[ARA]ل قد صر حت من قب ل قائ ًلا "أنا أ هت م بالتواز ن بي ن العمل والحياة الخاص ة، و أ عشر بالتوتر إذا ل م يتح قق ذلك"، و هذا لي سأمر ًا سهًلا بالن بسة لل فناني .ن فماذا يعن يالتواز ن بي ن العمل و الحياة الخاص ة بالن بسة لك؟

As I've said many times, in the end art is something that emerges from the artist’s own life. Life and play must be combined to create important work. You shouldn't be obsessed with the idea of, say, ‘music for music’s sake’ or ‘vibe for vibe’, stuff like that. Life takes precedence and the work emerges from it. I live as if I’m balancing on a beam. I can't help but enjoy it. Creation is like a divine punishment. Still, it's fun, and I'm lucky to be able to live this kind of live, as a working professional artist.

- What have made you good to be able to work on lately? Or what are you looking to do in the future?

[ARA]ما العمل الذي ل م تكن ت فعله مؤخر ًا وعندما فعتله و جدت ه أمر ًأ جيدًا؟ أو العمل الذي ل م ت قم ب ه من قب ل وتود ف يت جربته يو مًا ما؟

These days, I meet new people, we become friends, and we try working together. In terms of human relationships, I actually think I lived a somewhat narrow and closed off life until around the middle of last year. The stimulation of the new in that regard can be unfamiliar, tricky, but bit by bit something changes inside of me. If I get the balance right, this kind of change can be good, right?
